DB2 is a family of relational database management system (RDBMS) products from IBM that serve a number of different operating system platforms. According to IBM, DB2 leads in terms of database market share and performance. Although DB2 products are offered for UNIX-based systems and personal computer operating systems, DB2 trails Oracle's database products in UNIX-based systems and Microsoft's Access in Windows systems.
OS/390 and VM operating systems and its mid-range AS/400 systems, IBM offers DB2 products for a cross-platform spectrum that includes UNIX-based Linux, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, and SCO UnixWare; and for its personal computer OS/2 operating system as well as for Microsoft's Windows 2000 and earlier systems. DB2 databases can be accessed from any application program by using Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface, the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface, or a CORBA interface broker.
Rapid application development (RAD) is a software development methodology that uses minimal planning in favor of rapid prototyping. The "planning" of software developed using RAD is interleaved with writing the software itself. The lack of extensive pre-planning generally allows software to be written much faster, and makes it easier to change requirements.
In rapid application development, structured techniques and prototyping are especially used to define users' requirements and to design the final system. The development process starts with the development of preliminary data models and business process models using structured techniques. In the next stage, requirements are verified using prototyping, eventually to refine the data and process models. These stages are repeated iteratively; further development results in "a combined business requirements and technical design statement to be used for constructing new systems".
RAD approaches may entail compromises in functionality and performance in exchange for enabling faster development and facilitating application maintenance.
Lotus Domino is an IBM server product that provides enterprise-grade e-mail, collaboration capabilities, and a custom application platform. Domino began life as Lotus Notes Server, the server component of Lotus Development Corporation's client-server messaging technology. It can be used as an application server for Lotus Notes applications and/or as a web server. It also has a built-in database system in the format of NSF. Its directory services can be used for authentication purposes as well.
The Lotus Domino server can provide multiple services. The core services include:
- Email server (supporting Lotus Notes, POP3, IMAP, web browser and Outlook clients and SMTP support)
- Applications server (the Lotus Notes client provides the runtime)
- Web server (Lotus Notes data or other surfaced via a web browser)
- Database server (Notes Storage Facility)
- Directory server (LDAP)
IBM Rational Functional Tester is software test automation tool used by quality assurance teams to perform automated regression testing. Testers create scripts by using a test recorder which captures a user's actions against their application under test. The recording mechanism creates a test script from the actions. The test script is produced as either a Java or Visual Basic.net application, and with the release of version 8.1, is represented as a series of screen shots that form a visual story board. Testers can edit the script using standard commands and syntax of these languages, or by acting against the screen shots in the story board. Test scripts can then be executed by Rational Functional Tester to validate application functionality. Typically, test scripts are run in a batch mode where several scripts are grouped together and run unattended.
During the recording phase, the user must introduce verification points. Verification points capture an expected system state, such as a specific value in a field, or a given property of an object, such as enabled or disabled. During playback, any discrepancies between the baseline captured during recording and the actual result achieved during playback are noted in the Rational Functional Tester log. The tester can then review the log to determine if an actual software bug was discovered.
IBM Tivoli Directory Server (ITDS), formerly known as IBM Directory Server, is an IBM implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, and is part of the IBM Tivoli Identity & Access Management portfolio.
IBM Tivoli Directory Server is a powerful, security-rich and standards-compliant enterprise directory for corporate intranets and the Internet. Directory Server is built to serve as the identity data foundation for rapid development and deployment of Web applications and security and identity management initiatives by including strong management, replication and security features.
Several authentication methods are available with IBM Tivoli Directory Server, beyond basic usernames and passwords. ITDS supports digital certificate-based authentication, the Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL), Challenge-Response Authentication Mechanism MD5 (CRAM-MD5), and Kerberos authentication.
IBM Tivoli Directory Server is a powerful LDAP infrastructure that provides a foundation for deploying comprehensive identity management applications and advanced software architectures.
WebSphere Integration Developer is the user-friendly authoring environment for end-to-end integration in your SOA.
IBM Integration Designer was announced on April 5, 2011, as the follow-on product to WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition.
If you are looking for a tool that simplifies integration with visual editors and built-in test support, consider IBM Integration Designer. IBM Integration Designer is a user-friendly Eclipse-based developer tool providing visual drag-and-drop programming and a test environment for WebSphere ESB, WebSphere Adapters and Adapter Toolkit, DataPower, and IBM Business Process Manager Advanced.
