Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work. It is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. Plagiarism is considered academic dishonesty. Plagiarism in academia and industry it is a serious ethical offence, and cases of plagiarism can constitute copyright infringement.

The aim of any educational institute is to uphold the quality of education, research and scholarly communication. With the advent of sources of information from the digital world, the evaluation of academic writing has become a major challenge for the faculty community. As we are aware, authenticity, honesty and quality adherence in academic writing bring academic integrity. Apart from evaluating the students and researchers for skills, knowledge, and critical thinking talents in this information age, evaluating them for the academic integrity to prepare them to become responsible, contributing citizens is a real challenge.

How to prevent plagiarism?

Originality check allows educators to check students work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against continuously updated databases. Every originality report provides instructors with the opportunity to teach their students proper citation methods as well as to safeguard their institution’s academic integrity.
MITS is the licensed user of the “Anti-Plagiarism software” URKUND and in the past, TURNITIN was used from 2013 to 2015. Through URKUND, students’ assignments, project reports and PhD theses can be checked for improper citation and plagiarized content. MITS is also offering consultancy services for evaluating the originality of students’ assignments, faculty publications and theses etc.

Plagiarism Guidelines

The minor and major project reports of PG and UG students will be accepted for submission, if the similarity index is less than the percentage motioned below in the table. If the similarity index is more than the required percentage, the students are advised to modify accordingly and re-submit the soft copy of the report, until the similarity index is below the required percentage motioned.
